I AM DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS

I did not have to dream hard for this Christmas was certainly a white one. Blowing snow and low visibility came true magically  from listening to Bing Crosby's White Christmas.

Christmas Eve I had my traditional oyster stew and snuggled up with Baboo and Sunny (Jessamyn's bulldog) watching Christmas movies.

Christmas I was graciously invited to the Schneider house to Christmas dinner...yummy and plenty to eat with good fellowship.

Silly Linda!

Jessamyn, Jay, Taylen and Jarret came sliding in to my house Christmas evening from Colorado Springs. They spent a few days skiing and had Christmas Eve with Jay's family. I was very thankful that they made it safely in such poor weather.

Must have had  too much eggnog!

Last Saturday I went to Zeyda's dance recital and Sunday to her Christmas program at the UMC in Mitchell.

So as you see I have been busy keeping up with the holiday bustle...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Slacking!

Boy have I been slacking. Didn't realize until today that I haven't blogged for a two weeks. Don't know why...last weekend was a read feast instead of doing the necessary Christmas decorating. I just couldn't get into the spirit until this past Tuesday morning, lol!

Last night was my last night teaching until next spring. I was very fortunate that I had a great bunch of students. They all passed with flying colors, all getting A's on their finals!

Today I am heading to Gordon to stay with the grandsons while Jay and Jessamyn head on to a third year anniversary skiing getaway . A very happy anniversary to you both!

SHAKE UP IN NEBRASKA!

I worked today on the Memory Support Unit at Highland Park Care center. When I got home it was quite a surprise to see that Bo Pelini, Nebraska's football coach had been fired. I could hardly believe my eyes! Seven seasons and no National Championship and some embarrassing losses later. Hope the powers to be will find a new coach that we will excel at the University of Nebraska and meet the very high expectations of the fan base.

Thanksgiving was wonderful with beautiful weather, great food and fellowship. I was thankful for all my family and friends who partook in our celebration. Note the picture of all of us above except Marc who was taking the picture and Breqkon who was snoozing.

The last few weeks have been jammed pack with Jarret wrestling  in Alliance and winning his his weight class at the middle school tournament. Both boys fulfilling their deer tags at the annual hunt on the Box L ranch.

From now on it will be a rush to Christmas. I pulled all the Christmas decorations down and put away the fall ones. Christmas containers now litter my garage floor. Two weeks left of teaching school and a month to Christmas. Ho, Ho, Ho!

Flying Dishwahsers!

What can I say but do pigs fly? No but dishwashers do!

I just wanted my readers to know the incredible story about what happened after preparing myself to have a plumber out to install the new kitchen faucet and dishwasher that I purchased. The plumber was scheduled to be out the first thing yesterday morning after picking up my new dishwasher at the store. Well, I waited all day...I was getting pretty nervous since I had an appointment to get my hair cut at 3 pm right before teaching my night class at 4. He didn't show up until 2:25 pm and guess what? Let me explain yesterday's scenario; it was very windy and blustery. As the plumber was on the way out to my place he met the a garbage truck. My brand new dishwasher was sucked up and out of the back of his truck on to the highway. Pigs don't fly but dishwashers do! HE DID NOT TIE IT DOWN!!! Needless to say I am pretty sick about it! The reason I bought the dishwasher off the show room floor was so I could have it installed before Thanksgiving. Family and friends I am giving notice that there will be KP duty if eating at my house this Thanksgiving. We will be doing the dishes the old fashion way. What a fiasco!!!

Brrr...Saluting Our Veterans!

Who turned on the freezer! Goodness sake its a balmy 9 degrees out! Wind chill of -9 and light snow. What a day for celebrating our veterans. Good thing this year there is inside remembrances to celebrate their sacrifice!

My father was a Chaplin in the navy during WII and my business partner's husband Tom received a purple heart during the Vietnam war. We proudly acknowledge all who proudly served their country to preserve our freedom!

Of course since it is so cold my temperamental furnace is on the blink again for the third time. Now my dishwasher is leaking and my sprayer is broken on my kitchen faucet along with the hot water handle which is stripped. How is it that everything goes to pot at one particular time? Who knows maybe it is the winter sprites or some devilish snow elf that is unhappy.

I want to thank my kids and grandkids for helping me this past Sunday. Jay, Taylen, Jarret and Jessamyn with bringing and setting up the kennel for Baboo. Jay and Jarret for cleaning my gutters and putting on new gutter ends. Jessamyn and Paqui for helping with winterizing deck pots and cleaning after. Taylen for fixing my dryer vent. THANKS SO MUCH! We enjoyed a very Italian feast after along with good conversation and football. At least someone was pooped!

Getting ready for Thanksgiving, calling in the turkeys!

Moving On To The Next Holiday

Halloween is official over and other holidays will be rapidly approaching! Pics from this past Halloween come forth.

Cookie Monster not a happy trick or treater!

Zeyda, the Spirit Girl is trying to console Cookie Monster, lol!

Next up is my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. I am having turkey day at my abode due to popular demand. Nothing more close to my the heart than spending time with family and friends giving thanks!

It has been a little cool around here this weekend. The old furnace has gone on the blink twice. The repair man was once again here this morning. This time he found an air leak that would not let the furnace remained lit. But lucky for me I have a wood stove to keep me toasty if it happens to turn off again!

For today is our first snow storm of the season...

Work, Holidays Then Vacation

I am on the verge of being quite busy for the next couple of months. Starting with teaching another 80 hour BNA class Monday through Thursday for 6 weeks beginning November 3rd through December 10th. Then we have Thanksgiving and Christmas thrown into the mix. All the while I continue to help take on RN call at a facility that our business contracts with.  But best of all is the yearly trek to Hawaii to visit my sister. I will be flying on February 3rd and staying through February 26th. It will be a time to decompress and fill a long winter month. This year's side trip will be to Molokai the 5th largest Hawaiian Island (260 sq. mi) with a population of 7,404.  I have never been to this more remote island and I am anxious to see it.

This past week I had a great time watching Zeyda and Breqkon while Mommy and Daddy went to Denver for the Pearl Jam concert. We had a great time hanging and going to the park.

Still putting up tomatoes. This is the last of them and I will be making sauce for lasagna and future meals. Still have more jerky, cinnamon rolls, and cookie bars to make too.

Slacking

I guess I have been slacking on the blogging. It seems that time has slipped away from me once again. Maybe its because I am so wrapped up with this fall's harvest fest. Putting the finishing touches on the tomatoes that continue to ripen in my garage. Dehydrating  jerky for the winter, similar to what the indians did years ago. Trying out new recipes with all the forms of winter squash I grew.  The carrots even got dug.

Carrot harvest
An empty garden except for the giant sunflowers that provide winter bird feed, raspberry bushes, strawberries and herb beds.

Did make a quick trip to Rapid City this week to return an expensive wireless fence to PetSmart. It was fitting that Baboo should ride shotgun and keep me company since he is the reason for all the trouble. I have been trying to figure a way to keep him in the backyard. Baboo should try out for the doggy poll vault Olympics. He can spring himself over the back fence with the greatest  of ease. I decided on a less glamorous fencing fix. I patched the area hillbilly style. If it works, it works right? I can live with the humiliation since I barely could get the extra T-post driven in the ground myself.

Had a little pit stop at Angostura Reservoir on the way to Rapid. The view was truly amazing with the shimmering light reflecting off the water!

Yesterday I went to Rushville to watch Jarret play his last 8th grade football game. The Mustangs played Chadron and it was another blowout win, 48-14. His team has been undefeated both their 7 and 8th grade years and only have been score on twice in those years! They are good bunch of football players. Jarret loves the game and is an impressive running or tail back. Imagine the high school coach will be glad to have them next year.

This is the epitome of how my day goes ...

Its a Wrap!

It's a wrap! The garden is officially done producing for the year 2014. There is definitely relief and maybe some sadness for the end. However there are still tomatoes, winter squash and peppers to process into an assortment of delectable sauces, condiments and relishes. So even when the growing part is finished there is still much left to do.

The bounty is good!

Tomatoes

More tomatoes!

Wheelbarrow full of pumpkins winter squash.

Only watermelon in the garden,  yummy!

Got back to Alliance after a week of helping out at the Voss household and there was four and a quarter inches of rain in the gauge and tree branches all around the yard again. Benches were blown over and deck ornaments bit the dust. Most rain I have seen in a gauge around here ever!

Jessamyn's tubal reversal surgery went well and I thank God for that! Her doctor said everything looked excellent. Now it is very promising for Jessamyn and Jay to have a baby. That means it is highly likely that I will be a Granny again!!!

Being at the Voss's entitled me be in on all the Gordon-Rushiville Mustang homecoming festivities. All the activities sure brought back those high school memories of years past...

Jarret at the homecoming parade and pep rally, goofying around!

A Boomer Rant!

What, is she going off the deep end. Maybe so but fall always makes me reminisce about the past. So my past is steeped in boomer history and expectations of my generation. Coming of age during the Vietnam War and becoming a rebel against the establishment indoctrinated my beliefs throughout my life growth.    We boomers tried to overcome poverty, prejudice and injustice the only way we knew how through our expressive natures.

For me, I was very sheltered growing up as a minister's daughter of older parents. So I was more of a want a be rebel, a late bloomer with a life partner at an early age. My poor parents had no clue what do with me except sentence me to a year of house arrest.

When my generation started to rebel the establishment called us peace-nicks or hippies. Protests, free love and drugs sometimes were in the game. We got birth control pills and that changed everything! Free love without fear of pregnancy until Aides arrived in the 1980's.

It was liberating at times to feel so young and unimpeded; thinking you would live forever and solve all the worlds problems. But low and behold, look at us today. There is still war, injustice and terrible diseases that the new generations have to address.

Long haired men of old often are now bald. Our waist lines are enlarged with joints that are stiff and sore. We are still boomers, still mean well and want to change the world. But we do it in a more civilized way with social media and by our civic duty. I for one still like the notion of free love. Free love to all peoples no matter of color, religion or sexual orientation. Maybe I got it wrong when I was younger. Free love isn't just about sex, it is about loving one another not only in the good times but when things turn sour and bad.  Treating each other with respect no matter what we believe.

I am here in Gordon with too much time on my hands hanging with my grandsons. Jessamyn's surgery went well! Jay is bringing her home from Colorado and are in route. Big homecoming tonight with Taylen playing football and having a date to the dance. Parade is next up so gotta go... Will be pictures next week.

Almost Fall

It is almost fall right? Zeyda had her sixth birthday bash, with soggy cool fall like weather. She however, didn't seem to mind.

Then football has started with all it's glory including bumps, bruises and abrasions. Not  to mention the contusions left by the domestic violence allegations and scandals plaguing the NFL!

Clayton and Taylen at Hemingford/Mustang JV game

Fall has definitely come with an early frost and snow. The harvest rush is on. Canning along with freezing seems to the activity every spare moment.

Baseball Past and Future

Gordon/Rushville Babe Ruth Baseball Team

It was my pleasure last Friday night to attend the dedication of the Modisett Baseball Field in Rushville, Nebraska. Taylen and Jarret both were privileged to play on the new refurbished field on the that night. They played Chadron's Babe Ruth team and won 7-4. Here is a little bit of history concerning the park's past. Enjoy!

A History of the Modisett Ball Park

The history of Modisett Ball Park began in 1935 when Sheridan County brothers and ranchers Albert and Mayre Modisett established a trust (enhanced in 1944), which ultimately left a lasting gift to their neighbors. These wealthy cattlemen gave Rushville funds for the purpose of ultimately building several new structures and facilities, including a new city hall and swimming pool, an airport, a men's club, a golf course, a city park, and a state-of-the-art baseball field to host the game they both loved.

Construction began on the ball park in 1939 with completion and dedication in 1940 before a crowd of 2,500 on opening day.

Modisett Ball Park was the best ball field in western Nebraska, but got a significant feather in its cap in 1954 when Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Braves began holding a baseball school and tryout camp in Rushville. The town's own Gene Leahy, brother of Notre Dame coaching legend Frank Leahy, knew an executive with the Braves' organization and was instrumental in bringing their coaches, players, and scouts to give instruction to and take a look at would-be big league players from Nebraska and surrounding states. Young men from the Rockies to the Missouri River and Canada to Texas were put through their paces by baseball greats, including Hall-of-Fame player and coach Paul Waner.

The baseball school was truly a community event. Players and coaches didn't stay in hotels or motels - they stayed in the homes of Rushville residents providing free room and board to the big-league trainers and their students.

The school included two days of drills and instructions and on the third day two teams of all-stars were picked to play each other. Crowds of 3,000-plus, more than doubling the population of Rushville, were not uncommon.

The summer school continued through the early 1960s, with the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels also bringing in players, coaches, and scouts. Several of the players were offered tryouts with the ball clubs and at least one - a lefty pitcher named Dale Hendrickson of Gering, NE - was signed to contract and won 41 games.

Eventually the big-leaguers stopped coming to Rushville, but the Modisett Ball Park continued to serve as the community ball field. Time and the Nebraska climate took their toll on the grandstand, field, and surrounding facilities, and the city did its best within its means to maintain the historic ball park.

In 2013, Rushville Mayor Chris Heiser contacted John Gottschalk about the condition of the grandstand and the need for repairs. John and his wife Carmen, both natives of Rushville, had created a charitable foundation for their diverse philanthropic interests, but John Gottschalk took a particular interest in this project since he played at the park as a boy.
Gottschalk asked Heiser to hold work on the ball park until it had a chance for a proper review. Within a week, he assembled the architecture and engineering team that designed the TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, home of the College World Series. Gottschalk and the HDR Architecture team reviewed the ball park with Heiser, and as a result of the site visit, it was determined that a complete restoration of the aged Modisett Ball Park was in order.

Initially committing $250,000 toward the restoration, the Gottschalk Foundation challenged the Rushville community in December 2013 to raise $100,000 by March 1, 2014. Simultaneously with the community fundraising, Gottschalk committed to raise an additional $100,000 from other donors. Rushville met the challenge, raising more than the amount by the deadline.

Demolition of the old grandstand was completed March 9 and the project bid was awarded to Nemaha Sports Construction of Lincoln. Pre-construction planning began immediately; dedication is August 31. The Modisett brothers' initial gift served their town for 75 years. With the new construction and an endowment for its preservation, the Modisett Ball Park will continue well into the future.
